  • Celebrate International Women’s Day in Newmarket

    Across the world, International Women’s Day has been recognized for 115 years and this year, the spotlight is on how to “Give to Gain” a reminder of how giving our time, voices and support helps create a more inclusive future for women and girls and strengthens our community. 

    Here are some of the events and opportunities around Town:  

    Explore historic female heroes at Book Club: Pick up a featured book and explore the stories of women during WWI and WWII. Book club members have the choice of reading “The Diamond Eye” by Kate Quinn or “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah.  Join us on March 28 for a workshop event featuring book discussion and related historical craft, Ukrainian Wax Egg Decorating based on the traditional methods of Pysanky.

    Meet Newmarket-born bestselling author Ashley Audrain: Share an intimate evening with bestselling author Ashley Audrain. Her debut novel, The Push, was a New York Times, Sunday Times, and numbeone international bestseller and a Good Morning  America Book Club pick. It has sold in more than forty territories, and a limited television series is currently in development. Her second novel, The Whispers, is also a number one international bestseller. Audrain previously worked as the publicity director of Penguin Books Canada, and prior to that she worked in public relations. She lives in Toronto but is originally from Newmarket.

    Get INSPRIED by local emergency responders at Central York Fire Services: Join Central York Fire Services (CYFS) for the fifth annual INSPIRE event which is designed to ignite interest in the next generation of first responders. Held in recognition of International Women’s Day, CYFS will be joined by non-profit and emergency service organizations focused on empowerment, community, mental health, and more. Learn more at cyfs.ca/inspire.

    Create & Build: A Pocketlings Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop: Pocketlings were created by a 10-year-old Black girl who couldn't find a soft doll that made her feel seen—so she made one.  This International Women’s Day the Newmarket Library is hosting an interactive workshop to encourage young entrepreneurs to explore how ideas turn into mini businesses through storytelling, creativity and hands-on activities. Participants will hear the inspiring story behind the kid-led Pocketlings business and can design their own mini business concept in a fun, supportive environment. The session blends creativity, problem-solving, and age-appropriate money concepts without feeling like a lesson. Kids can expect to create, share ideas and walk away feeling proud of what they’ve built with a few surprise giveaways to make the experience even more memorable. Registration is required.
